ARTA a été créée en 1989 à la Cartoucherie, Bois de Vincennes, à Paris. L’association est soutenue par le Ministère de la Culture et de la Communication, ainsi que la Ville de Paris. Lucia Bensasson, Jean-François Dusigne en sont les directeurs artistiques. Louis Joinet est président et Ariane Mnouchkine est vice-présidente.

ARTA est un studio de recherche et d’expérimentation sur l’art de l’acteur, ayant pour vocation l’ouverture internationale. Par delà l’initiation aux traditions scéniques étrangères, il s’agit pour les artistes de théâtre français et européens de tirer profit de la découverte d’autres modes de création, en se confrontant à des approches inhabituelles, au contact de personnalités, pédagogues reconnus, issus des différents continents. La transmission des expériences conduit ainsi à étoffer ses propres outils, à prendre conscience des processus de création suivis, à interroger les modalités de conduite ou d’accompagnement des acteurs au sein d’un ensemble. Artistes, étudiants, élèves des écoles artistiques, chercheurs peuvent consulter également à ARTA ses archives de travail et son fonds documentaire, participer à ses événements ou encore observer le travail d’atelier en cours. Témoin de ces expériences, chacun peut tirer profit des instants concrets de transmission auprès des maîtres. Les passerelles interculturelles incitent à préciser les rôles de l’acteur d’aujourd’hui, tout en interrogeant les méthodes et la manière dont l’expérience se décante. Tout en enrichissant les potentiels créatifs, la découverte de pratiques non familières ou étrangères aide en retour à mieux se situer au cœur des enjeux de la création contemporaine européenne. La maison d’ARTA s’offre ainsi comme l’espace de rencontres et de recherches pratiques indispensable pour préparer le terreau de nouvelles alternatives, afin de considérer non seulement le spectacle vivant tel qu’il a été ou tel qu’il se pratique, mais aussi tel qu’il pourrait être.

The prime and essential goal of ARTA is to offer performers in Europe the opportunity of working with famous performing artists from all over the world.

ARTA is a studio where the performer who seeks to develop his art by opening it up to influence and inspiration from abroad will find the resources to research and experiment. Through the widest range of initial training methods, performers can expand their practice, re-examining it in the light of personal contact with teachers and fellow-artists who are regularly invited from all over the world to lead the workshops.

Students, including those attending all kinds of theatre schools, academics, and researchers can also consult our extensive resource library, take part in events or (subject to agreement) observe ongoing workshops, the transmission and sharing of skills and their further exploitation.

ARTA is defined by its practical approach to the great theatrical traditions of the world. These remain an infinite and fruitful source of inspiration for the performer (actor, dancer, singer...) who seeks to evolve from the precision of realistic interpretation to the rhythm of a more stylised art form, yet without losing the essential keys to the part or role : imagination and inner truth.

Indeed, we are convinced that acting cannot be reduced to mere mastery of speech. Neither is the actor’s interpretation in any way reduced to a mere question of talent, presence or instinctive relationship with the audience : it is essential to acquire a set of practical tools.

As a musician practises scales or a dancer will warm up, the actor must also find the essential elements in the text by approaching his part physically, stimulating the senses, developing the imagination.

This is why traditional techniques may help to widen the usual training options by including song and dance and acrobatics, sometimes even martial arts. Beyond mere cultural diversity and formal variety, any or all organic approaches to perfornming, by their use of the body itself, underscore the universal laws of movement and gesture which govern all forms of life, and thus, all forms of the arts - from gesture to word, from silence to immobility, from cry to song. Then creative impulse and imagination can step in to create the performance.

The ARTA studios offer the necessary space for artistic encounters and exploration. Fresh alternatives can be discovered and existing performance techniques be revitalized and transformed.
