ARTA

In June 1988, ARTA (Research and Traditions in Acting)  was founded, under the impulse of Ariane Mnouchkine,
by the five theaters at "la Cartoucherie", the Théâtre de l'Aquarium, the Théâtre du Chaudron,
the Théâtre de l'Epée de Bois, the Théâtre du Soleil and the Théâtre de la Tempête.

The prime and essential goal of ARTA is to offer to western actors the possibility
of a one-month work with the most famous Masters of theatre.

At the creation, ARTA, directed by Lucia Bensasson and Claire Duhamel, organized workshops in the different
theaters of "la  Cartoucherie". In 1994, the City of Paris, with the participation du Ministère de la Culture
allocated to the association a new building  "la Maison Blanche" in La Cartoucherie .

ARTA is defined by its practical approach of the great theatre traditions throughout
the world. These remain, indeed, an unending and fruitful source of inspiration
for the actor who seeks to evolve from the precision of realistic interpretation
to the rhythm of a more stylised art form, yet without losing the essential keys
to the part or role: imagination and inner truth.

Indeed, if you are convinced, as we are, that acting cannot be reduced to
mere mastery of speech, and the actor's interpretation in no way reduced
to a mere question of talent, presence or undescribable relationship
with the public; but that it is essential to acquire a set of very practical tools.
As a musician or a dancer will warm up,  an actor must also stimulate his senses,
strenghthen his imagination, approach his part physically, so to speak.

This is what traditional techniques have always done very aptly. They
widen the usal training options by including song and dance and
acrobacy, sometimes even martial arts. Beyond mere cultural diversity and
formal variety, any or all organic approaches to acting, by their use of
the body itself, underscore the universal laws of movement and gesture
which govern all forms of life, and thus, the arts - from gesture to
word, from silence to immobility, from cry to song.
Then can imagination step in to relay reality.

At ARTA, our workshops last four weeks, they are placed under the
direction of great masters, usually direct transmitters and depositaries
of ancestral traditions, some only too little known, others having thus
nearly escaped oblivion

ARTA is subsidised by the Ministère de la Culture, La Ville de Paris, and the DRAC Ile-de-France.
